HOW TO BECOME AN ACTOR

So you are deciding to take a step toward a new career. Maybe you always dreamed of being an actor and now you want to make that dream a reality. Whatever your decision to get involved, you have made the first step. Now, brace yourself, because just as it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to make it in any other career, acting is no different! The hours are not stable and there are no guarantees of getting high paid work. You need to be able to handle rejection and criticism. Still interested in learning how to become an actor? Well, you should be. A little bit of the plain truth should never let you second guess your dreams in life!

So, here you are, brand new to the industry, or maybe you've gained a little experience. Most importantly, after you have decided you want to act, get yourself out there and start getting that experience:

  • There are many resources online, at your local newsstand, and even at a bookstore. With that, you have many options of how you want to begin.
  • You can take an acting class, join a theater group, go to a workshop. Check out what you can do in your local area and do not give up.
  • If you live close to New York, Los Angeles, or Miami then great. They are the hubs of entertainment. If not, don't worry. There is no need to move just yet. Many areas still can provide you with a great start.
  • Look for independent filmmakers, Student film, and "extra" work to start getting yourself acquainted to the world of acting.
  • Theater is a great place to learn too. There are differences to acting on film and on stage, but we will cover that another time.

Just get out and network. The key thing is to get involved and learn from every experience you have. It is great to dream and even greater to make that dream become a reality. You will never know until you TRY!
